Maharashtra can have local body elections at the end of this year.
Mumbai: The Electoral Commission of the State of Maharashtra has begun the training process for the elections of the local body after this month of the Supreme Court. A senior official said Monday that the local body elections can be held at the end of this year after several formalities are completed. Let us know that due to the prevalence of these elections, they are also called elections of ‘mini assembly’. On May 6, the Supreme Court cleared the way for the local body elections in Maharashtra, which had been staying for more than 5 years due to the problem of the OBC reserve. The Court ordered the State Electoral Commission to issue an electoral notification in 4 weeks.
‘The neighborhood formation process will take about 70 days’
The State Elections Commissioner DIESH Waghmare said: ‘The neighborhood formation process will take about 70 days. After this there will be a reserve process, which will take 15 more days. You can take 40 days more update the voter list. In this way, the local body elections can be held at the end of this year. The term of the 29 municipal corporations, 248 municipalities, 42 Nagar Panchayats, 32 Zilla Parishad and 336 Samitis Panchayat have finished, and all these are currently under the administrators. The term of 27 municipal corporations ended between 2020 and 2023. Ichalkranji and Burning are the newly built municipal corporations.
Raunting the way for the election after the order of the Supreme Court
Waghmare said: “The elections were delayed due to several reasons, including OBC reserve requests, the formation of neighborhoods, the number of members in local organizations and the government that takes the right to the formation of the room.” On May 6, the Supreme Court ordered the Electoral Commission of the State of Maharashtra to notify the elections in 4 weeks. The controversial issue of the OBC reservation will be the same before the Bathia Commission report of 2022. The Supreme Court accepted the recommendation of the commission to reserve seats 27 percent for this class in local organizations to decide the data of the precise population of OBC.
‘BMC elections will be for 227 existing seats’
The Banthia Commission, formed in March 2022, investigated the OBC reserve in local agencies. The Commission recommended a 27 percent reservation for OBC within the 50 percent reserve limit. Speaking of Mumbai, Waghmare said the Municipal Corporation of Brihanmumbai, that is, BMC’s elections will be for the 227 existing seats, not for the first 236 seats. The Mahayuti Alliance, which won a wonderful victory in the assembly elections in November last year in the local body elections, will be a challenge to maintain its reign, which will compete with Maha Vikas Aghadi, that is, MVA.
Who will land in the field, not yet decided
Mahayuti includes BJP, Shiv Sena by Eknath Shinde and NCP of Ajit Pawar, and MVA includes Shiv Sena (UBT), NCP (SP) and Congress. However, these parties also have to decide whether they will play the solo elections or their own alliances. Prime Minister Devendra Fadnavis has said that the local body elections will be fought together as a Mahayuti policy. However, in some places they can also fight differently. In MVA, the Congress has left the decision to the local leadership, while the head of Shiv Sena (UBT) Uddhav Thackeray has said that they are talking to the workers of their matches about the strategy of the local body elections. The NCP (SP) leader Jayant Patil has also asked his party unit to prepare for local elections.
Why is it called the election of ‘Mini Assembly’?
The local elections of Maharashtra’s body are also called ‘mini assembly’, since these elections are important in state policy such as the elections of the Assembly. These include 29 municipal corporations, 248 municipal councils, 42 Nagar Panchayats, 32 Zilla Parishad and 336 Panchayat committees, which affect millions of voters. These elections prove the strength of Mahayuti and Maha Vikas Aghadi. Especially the result of large bodies such as Municipal Corporation Corporation gives direction to State policy. They evaluate power and influence at the local level. (PTI)
