The ‘International Conservation Gland Conference’ held from May 29 to 31, 2025 in Dushanbe, the capital of Tayikistan, is an attempt to attract the world’s attention to glaciers that melt rapidly.

The conference, organized in collaboration with international institutions such as the United Nations, the Asian Development Bank and UNESCO, will be presented in the ‘Dushambe Ghiryad Declaration’, the specific commitments and the strategic recommendations will be presented in the COP30.

Quick Foundation of the glacial crisis

According to the United Nations Organization, the ‘Himada World monitoring monitoring monitoring’, last year, Scandinavia, the Swalbard Islands in Norway and the glaciers of northern Asia recorded the greatest loss of ice in history.

The glaciers have lost more than 9 billion tons of massive mass (mass) since 1975, while the ice layers of Greenland and Antarctica are not included.

The fusion of glaciers not only shows the crisis of water resources, but also increases the risk of disasters such as landslides and lake explosions.

According to the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) report, in five years of the last six years, limiters have been migrated at a record level, and between 2022 and 2024, the greatest loss of glacial mass has been observed.

The OMM general secretary, Celest Soull, has emphasized the need to build a bridge between science, data exchange and political will. He warns that the merger of glaciers is not only a loss of ice, but a serious threat to human life, economy and ecosystem.

More than two billion population depend on glaciers

Worldwide, more than 2 Lakh 75 thousand glaciers cover an area of approximately 7 Lakh of square kilometers, and with the ice layers, they have about 70 percent of the global fresh water.

According to the United Nations World Nations World Water Development Report, the mountainous regions provide about 60 percent of the world’s annual fresh water supply.

More than two billion population of the world depend directly on the water obtained from the mountains. In these areas, areas such as shepherd, forestry, tourism and hydroelectric production depend on water -based activities.

But today the situation is serious. In the rural mountainous areas of developing countries, more than half of the people face food insecurity, women and children are the most affected. The rapid fusion of the glaciers of the hill, irrigation, biodiversity and water safety are having a generalized impact.

United Nations paper and approach

In Tayikistan, the United Nations Coordinator for Residents (RCO) Parvati Ramasswamy told the UN News that 2025 was declared “year of conservation of the International Hospital” thanks to the efforts of Tayikistan.

He said: “This conference will promote scientific innovation, the development of coherent policies and the collaboration action to avoid the process of merger, decomposition and withdrawal of glaciers.”

Speaking of efforts to train local communities, he said that they are strengthening through training and technology to promote the wise use of water, strengthen water supply systems and especially women, children, disabled and young people.

Conference expectations and the way ahead

Parvati Ramasswamy said: “This conference will recognize the loss of glaciers as a global climate and development challenge.”

Its purpose is to rebuild border cooperation, the proper allocation of financial and technical resources and the reconstruction of national strategies.

He said: “The United Nations are committed to the fact that glaciers should be part of the comprehensive strategy to deal with climate change and help life be safe and prosperous on earth.”
