Donations come from pledges and help save lives in humanitarian disasters. – eSHOP24X7
This fund ensures that whenever and wherever a crisis occurs, UN humanitarian workers can provide immediate assistance.
The Secretary General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, stated in a video message about this program organized on Tuesday that contributing to the fund saves lives.
The UN chief called on member states to “do more” and come forward with new donors to meet the $1 billion target for the fund. This money will be used to meet humanitarian assistance needs until 2025.
helping people around the world
The CERF was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 2005 and provides rapid and flexible financing in response to conflicts, wars and climate-related conflicts or disasters.
Since then, more than $9 billion has been allocated to help people in more than 100 countries and territories, including Lebanon, where CERF, in collaboration with the United Nations refugee agency UNHCR, provides shelter to families displaced by the recent war. The facility is helping to provide shelter and safety.
Aya Farhat, a young woman from the city of Brachit, is one of the beneficiaries of the assistance provided by this fund.
His family was displaced and he had to travel between seven schools to continue his education. At first he lived in a small, messy room where he couldn’t sleep well.
“Now we have a better room where we can live more or less properly and I am very happy,” Aya Farhat said in a video shown during the inauguration ceremony.
“Fortunately, I am with my family and none of our family members are separated or missing.”
‘United Nations success story’
In his message, the Secretary-General praised the unique, effective and important role of the Fund and called the CERF “a success story for the United Nations.”
“It is the first crisis relief response organization, based on rapid analysis, rapid decisions and rapid implementation, and focused on putting people first and starting relief operations as quickly as possible,” he said.
He said that since the establishment of this fund, more than 60 countries that once received assistance from this fund have become donors.
“But we need more support to build on CERF’s track record of results,” the UN chief said.
“As humanitarian needs continue to increase, funding contributions are not keeping pace. The need for a fully funded CERF is unprecedented at this time and requires $1 billion in funding.”
Important for humanitarian aid operations
The newly appointed UN Humanitarian Coordinator, Tom Fletcher, also reiterated this call. He said humanitarian workers are seeking $47 billion in 2025 to help 190 million people in 72 countries, and CERF is “absolutely critical” to these efforts.
Tom Fletcher recently traveled to war-torn Sudan and neighboring Chad, where more than half a million people have fled the fighting.
He said: “I met people whose lives have been devastated by conflict and war. I saw the extraordinary generosity of host communities. I saw aid workers working with bravery, ingenuity and expertise. And I saw them in the midst of that aid response “. See how CERF promotes humanitarian action.”
He said that since taking office he has learned that “CERF is more than just funding; It’s also about how it works.”
$349 million donation commitment
The United Nations Office for Humanitarian Affairs – OCHA reported that at the conference, 44 donors have committed to donate $349 million to CERF by 2025. While other donors are expected to contribute in the coming months,
“Donor announcements at last year’s event totaled more than $419 million. The nearly 17 percent decline in pledges (this year) is another indication of limited funding availability in 2025,” the agency said in a news release. will be.”
